Top 7 SMS API Providers (2026): Full Comparison Guide

best sms api providers

Table of Contents

The seven SMS API providers most teams shortlist are SMS.to, Twilio, Sinch, Infobip, Plivo, Vonage and Telnyx, and the best choice depends on where your users are, which channels you need and how you want to be billed. US-focused teams will find the lowest published per-segment rates at Telnyx, Plivo and Sinch, while teams sending across many countries should compare total cost per delivered message, including carrier fees and registration, rather than the headline rate.

We run SMS.to, so read our own entry with that in mind. Every competitor fact below was checked on the provider’s own website in September 2026 and is linked so you can confirm it. Where a provider does not publish a figure, we say so rather than guess. If you already know you want a pay-as-you-go SMS API with direct operator routes, you can skip to the checklist near the end.

How do the 7 SMS API providers compare at a glance?

US prices are shown where a provider publishes them, because the US is the one market all seven list in a comparable way. They are published list prices as of September 2026 and exclude US carrier fees unless stated.

One fairness point: SMS.to’s $0.023 is its starting price across all destinations, not a US rate, so compare the rate for SMS to the United States with the US figures above only after adding each provider’s carrier and registration fees.

How did we compare the providers?

We looked at what matters once real traffic is flowing, not just at sign-up:

  • Published pricing: whether a list price is public, what it includes and what is billed on top.
  • Coverage and network: what each provider says about countries, carrier connections and infrastructure.
  • Channels: which non-SMS channels are available from the same account, for fallback and richer messages.
  • Verification: whether a dedicated OTP product exists and how it is billed.
  • Developer path: free credit or trial, and how quickly you can get to a first delivery report.

We removed the review-site quotes and star ratings that appeared in earlier versions of this guide, because they change constantly and cannot be checked on the providers’ own pages.

Which SMS API provider fits which use case?

1. SMS.to: pay-as-you-go global SMS on a licensed operator’s routes

SMS.to is operated by Intergo Telecom, a licensed telecom and CPaaS operator in Cyprus that has been building messaging infrastructure since 2014. SMS is priced per destination from $0.023, with no contracts or setup fees, free credits on sign-up and a downloadable price list for every country. You can send over the HTTP API or over SMPP, which SMS.to rates at 2,000+ messages per second on supported setups.

Beyond SMS, the same account covers Viber business messages (up to 1,000 characters with images and buttons), WhatsApp and RCS through sales, HLR and MNP lookups, and a Verify API that tries SMS, WhatsApp, Viber or Telegram in the order you set. On OTT channels in Verify you pay the channel fee only if it delivers, and the Verify fee only when the user enters the code. Team members can share one account with allocated credits and access levels.

Best for: teams sending OTPs, alerts and campaigns to many countries who want one per-country rate, SMPP when volume grows, and a person to talk to about sender registration. Watch-outs: WhatsApp and RCS are enabled and priced through sales rather than self-serve, so allow time for activation if you need them at launch.

2. Twilio: the broadest product range

Twilio’s messaging page lists SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and conversational chat, reach to 180+ countries and 193B+ messages a year. Its US SMS pricing is $0.0083 per segment on long codes, toll-free numbers and short codes (published list price as of September 2026), with carrier fees added per message, for example $0.0035 to AT&T and $0.0045 to T-Mobile or Verizon, and $0.001 for messages that end in a failed status. Twilio Verify costs $0.05 per successful verification plus channel fees.

Best for: engineering teams that want messaging, voice, email and authentication from one vendor. Watch-outs: the total bill has several parts, so model carrier fees, number rental and registration before you compare.

3. Sinch: carrier connections and enterprise SLAs

Sinch’s SMS API page cites 600+ direct carrier connections, prioritised routing for OTP traffic, an enterprise-grade SLA and real-time smishing and artificially inflated traffic detection. Its SMS pricing lists US messages at $0.0078 per outbound message on 10DLC and toll-free numbers and $0.009 on short codes, plus carrier fees (published list price as of September 2026). A separate Verification API handles OTPs, and RCS, MMS, WhatsApp, email and voice sit on the same platform.

Best for: larger organisations that want contractual SLAs and fraud controls built into the route. Watch-outs: pricing outside the listed countries is selected per country or agreed with sales.

4. Infobip: omnichannel at very high volume

Infobip’s SMS page cites 800+ direct telco connections, local numbers in more than 150 countries and 261 billion SMS delivered through its platform in 2025. It supports short codes, toll-free numbers, 10DLC and virtual long numbers, plus two-way SMS and SMS 2FA. The pricing page describes pay-as-you-go SMS with a calculator by country and volume rather than a single published rate, and offers custom packages through sales. You can try it without a credit card.

Best for: enterprises running SMS alongside WhatsApp, Viber, RCS, email and voice in one contract. Watch-outs: you need to run the calculator or speak to sales to see your rate.

5. Plivo: low US list price and high throughput

Plivo’s US SMS pricing lists $0.0077 per message on long codes and short codes and $0.0079 on toll-free, with carrier surcharges added (published list price as of September 2026). Its SMS page says it can send to 226 countries through direct carrier connections, cites 10,000+ messages per second and 99.99% platform uptime, and offers trial credits without a credit card. Verify, with its FraudShield fraud controls, is sold as a separate product, and RCS and WhatsApp are available.

Best for: developer-led teams with heavy US transactional traffic. Watch-outs: check rates for each non-US destination you need, as they vary widely.

6. Vonage: SMS inside a wider API family

Vonage’s API pricing page quotes SMS API pricing from $0.00860 per message (published list price as of September 2026), with usage-based billing and free credit to start, no credit card required. Per-country rates are on its SMS pricing page and a downloadable sheet. The Messages API adds RCS, WhatsApp, MMS, Viber, Messenger and email, and Verify lists $0.06084 per successful verification plus messaging or voice rates.

Best for: teams that already use Vonage voice or video APIs and want messaging from the same provider. Watch-outs: the headline rate is a starting price, so look up each destination.

7. Telnyx: owned infrastructure and low US rates

Telnyx’s messaging page describes programmable messaging on infrastructure it owns end to end, numbers in 130+ countries, automatic opt-out handling and 24/7 free support. Its messaging pricing lists US SMS at $0.004 per part on local numbers, $0.0055 on toll-free and $0.007 on short codes, plus carrier pass-through fees, with numbers at $1.00 a month and a $0 platform fee (published list price as of September 2026). Verify covers SMS, voice and WhatsApp.

Best for: technical teams with North American traffic who also want voice and numbers from the same network. Watch-outs: carrier fees are passed through and vary by carrier, so the per-part rate is not the full cost.

What does an SMS API really cost?

The per-message rate is the start of the bill, not the end. Before you compare providers, price these for your own traffic:

  • Segments. A message over 160 GSM-7 characters, or 70 characters once it contains any Unicode character such as an emoji, is billed as several parts. The SMS length calculator shows the encoding and part count before you send.
  • Carrier and registration fees. In the US, carrier fees and 10DLC brand and campaign registration are billed on top at most providers. Many other countries require sender ID registration.
  • Failed messages. Some providers charge for messages that fail. Clean lists with HLR lookups before large sends.
  • Verification fees. Verify products usually add a per-success fee to the channel cost, so an OTP costs more than a plain SMS.
  • Throughput. Default throughput limits differ; ask what you get before a big launch.

For a worked example of how these add up in the US, see our SMS.to vs Twilio vs Telnyx comparison.

What should you check before choosing an SMS API provider?

  1. Which countries will you send to, and what does a delivered message cost in each, including fees?
  2. Do you need an alphanumeric sender ID, local numbers, toll-free, short codes or 10DLC, and who handles registration?
  3. Is your main use case OTP, alerts, support or marketing? OTP needs speed and fraud controls; marketing needs opt-out handling.
  4. Do you need two-way SMS and inbound webhooks, or only outbound?
  5. Are delivery reports pushed to your webhook, and are webhooks signed?
  6. Will you need HTTP only, or SMPP once volume grows?
  7. Do you want fallback to WhatsApp, Viber or RCS from the same account?
  8. Can non-developers send campaigns and read reports without engineering help?

If OTP is your main workload, our OTP API provider comparison goes deeper on verification pricing and fraud tools.

How SMS.to handles SMS API sending

SMS.to runs on Intergo Telecom’s licensed operator infrastructure with direct connections to mobile network operators and MVNOs. The SMS.to SMS API takes a single POST https://api.sms.to/sms/send request with your message, recipient, sender ID and an optional callback URL, and pushes delivery reports to your webhook as they arrive. Webhooks are signed so you can verify them, and opt-out links can be added to marketing messages automatically.

You get one rate per destination on the SMS price list, free credits to test, and guidance on sender ID rules and registration for each country you plan to reach. When volume grows, the same account can move to SMPP, add Viber or WhatsApp fallback, or clean numbers with HLR before you send.

FAQs

Which is the best SMS API provider?

There is no single best provider. For US-only traffic, Telnyx, Plivo and Sinch publish the lowest per-segment list prices. For many countries with one per-country rate and SMPP on request, SMS.to is a strong fit. For the widest product range, Twilio and Infobip lead.

How much does an SMS API cost?

Published list prices in September 2026 range from $0.004 per part (Telnyx, US) to $0.0083 per segment (Twilio, US), and SMS.to starts from $0.023 per SMS across all destinations. International rates vary by country, and carrier, registration and segment costs are added on top.

Do all SMS API providers support OTP?

All seven offer a way to send one-time passcodes. Twilio, Sinch, Plivo, Vonage, Telnyx and SMS.to have dedicated verification products, usually billed as a channel fee plus a fee per successful verification.

Should I use HTTP or SMPP?

HTTP is quicker to integrate and fits most applications. SMPP keeps a persistent connection and suits high, steady volumes. See our SMPP vs HTTP API guide for the trade-offs.

Can I switch SMS API providers later?

Yes. Keep sender IDs, templates and consent records in your own system, store provider message IDs separately, and switching becomes a change of endpoint and webhook mapping rather than a rebuild.

Want to test delivery to your own countries before you decide? Create a free account, no credit card needed, send a test message and watch the delivery report arrive.
